The wedding bells are only days from ringing, but the Bug Man can't resist his interest in maggots and murder. If you've read previous books featuring Nick Polchak, this should come as no surprise. He's a forensic etymologist, using his knowledge of bugs to solve crimes. It's a unique twist in the world of CSI-type fiction, and Tim Downs has created one of my favorite series.

In "Nick of Time," we find Nick about to march up the aisle and say "I do," something we would've never imagined possible in the first few books. With each story, he becomes a little more, uh, shall we say "human." This time, though, he is facing the deepest human relationship possible, and with that in mind, it doesn't take much to send him racing off into rural Pennsylvania, following a lead on a cold case. The lead comes from the hand of a recently murdered friend, and this convinces the Bug Man to chase down the clues and the killer. He encounters a small-town sheriff who seems particularly evasive, a flirtatious woman other than his fiancee, and flies of various types and in various levels of development. Along the way, he is forced to also face his own selfishness and his misunderstandings about women and marriage.

Tim Downs gives us some hilarious dialogue here, with Nick and Alena, his fiancee, batting words back and forth with equal dexterity. Alena, who trains and owns cadaver dogs, is no social butterfly herself, and they are quite the match. Even as the Bug Man discovers deceit among those he trusts, even as the story twists and turns, he must unravel his true feelings and face his deepest fears about the world of humans. Even the bugs can't keep him hidden forever. Not all is as it seems. The ending leaves room for more to explore in the seventh Bug Man book. And I continue to love the Bug Man and Alena, even if I'm not a big fan of maggots or cadavers.

Nick of Time Bug Man Tim Downs 9781595543103 Books Reviews

Nick Polchak is a character, who for lots of women, sums up the error in male thinking and communication. When Nick is confused and fumbling he's oh, so, cute. But when he puts a foot in it, or crosses over those lines, POW!, it's nice to see him get a little grief. I think men can identify with Nick because he says the things most men know not to say and that's got to be a vicarious thrill. Regardless. Nick is a bumbling, brilliant, charming, maddening character whom I have grown to love.

I'll admit to being almost horrified at the end of the Ends of the Earth. When the reader was left hanging over which woman was chosen by Nick. I was very glad that Nick fans voted and chose like I did. Had the other woman been chosen I'm afraid I couldn't have enjoyed Nick of Time. But, that said, I can also say, I loved, loved, loved Nick of Time.

Nick has chosen his soul mate. And, Nick is Nick. So things go awry and get twisted and people die and maggots are involved. Nick forgets basic, common sense rules about love and weddings. And Nick gets caught up in thoughts that mess with his mind. I'm not going to say much more about the story because I don't want to ruin one word for fans. I will say that I was nervous and concerned about how the book would end but was super satisfied at the conclusion, especially because the story is wide open for at least one more good book. A little plot twist was a terrific surprise. And the character interaction and the writing are beautiful things.

Well done, Mr. Downs....keep them coming. Please!
Nick Polchak is one of the best literary characters ever.

Had to say it.

Tim Downs is one of my favorite authors. He produces suspense fiction with wit and humor, along with some nice gory details about decomposing bodies.

This is because the protaganist of most of his novels is Dr. Nick Polchak, also known as the "Bug Man." He's a forensic entomologist, meaning he studies the insects that are drawn to corpses. It is a niche that Downs ably uses to give just enough tecnical jargon to help the reader really buy it.

Polchak also has one of the lowest social IQ's ever seen. He has a minimal filter - he says what he wants and has a great wit. The result is he is funnier than all get-out, and makes each Bug Man novel a joy to read, but a challenge to read in public (didn't want my recent airplane neighbor freaking out over my chuckling.)

In Nick of Time, it leads off of events of the Bug Man books Less the Dead and Ends of the Earth. Spoilers for those who haven't read those books - Nick is getting married! Even the clueless Dr. Polchak may have a soul mate in Alena Savard, a woman who grew up on a mountain alone with dozens of dogs that she trains.

With his wedding a week away, he is invited to a forensics conference by an old friend for a consult on a cold case. Over Alena's protests, Nick heads there only to find his friend dead.

Now he is off to find out what was happening with the cold case to see if there's a connection. Meanwhile, Alena is panicking over the lack of a groom, and with the happy date approaching, she sets off to find him - along with three of her best tracking dogs.

Nick's going to learn if he wants to be married, if it doesn't kill him first...

Downs continues a strong run in the Bug Man series. Fans will find their favorite points intact humor, suspense, mysteries for Nick to solve, and some big twists along the way. First time readers should pick the book up just fine, despite it building off of older novels. If you can read the others first then it will make more sense, but he writes in such a way that it isn't necessary.

The plot is a little incredible at times, but Downs has this character, um, down. Nick is very enjoyable as he says the things we could never get away with, and the plot moves quickly without any slow points. Alena is a strong counterpoint to Nick, although sometimes she sounds too much like him (sarcastic, not caring what people think). Nick even has an epiphany of sorts, and it will be interesting to see where it takes him.

Nick of Time was a great read, comfortable as a well-worn pair of jeans. Prior readers won't be disappointed, and new readers should fit right in to Nick's insect world. Fans of suspense and CSI-type shows will be well-served with Tim Downs latest.
