Awesome book if you enjoy the mythos, will make this briefer than I'd personally like so I don't bore/wall of text you blind and spoil half of it for you, but will add a few points.

Huge book, have a friend hold it for you while you read or your arm will half fall off like mine nearly did (probably from forgetting I was holding it as I became too engrossed with it almost instantly). It's more like 4 or 5 smaller novels all bound together into the pertinent life stories of how this fellow (you never learn his real name) becomes and grows into the Mad Monk Abdul Alhazred. This author's take on it anyhow, done well within the mythos and suitably dark, although not perfectly Lovecraftian since there's a glimmer of hope throughout. Which doesn't ruin it.

Donald Tyson is a very good writer
I am a fan of Lovecraft but I think that Mr. Tyson's writing style suits me better. I like how fleshed out the characters were and the story held my interest from beginning to end.
I purchased this book along with Necronomicon, after reviewing the Tarot Deck, which completes the Trilogy of Donald Tyson. You don't have to have the Tarot Deck, or have read Necronomicon, in order to enjoy this book, although they would aid in the understanding of some parts of the book. The book was extremely enjoyable and kept me in suspense in many places. I did not want to place the book down until I finished the book, however the book is alnost 700 pages in length, and time limitations and eye weariness thwarted my desire. I found Alhazred to be more enjoyable than Necronomicon, although I also enjoyed that book. Alhazred was more of a story than was Necronomicon, with less specific detail and more dialogue. I won't discuss any of the contents of the story, because I don't want to spoil anyone's suspense in reading the book. I can only say, that I was really surprised at the ending of the book. I hope that another book, continuing the story of Alhazred, where this book left off, will be written.
Hello, this is a very interesting story dealing with the author of the Necronomicon. Very well written and entertaining to read. Thanks.
This story holds together with a man being guided while thinking he is acting under his own will power. Questioning about the choices of other people and the choices of oneself is difficult and critical and this revealing of the blurring of those boundaries is nicely done in this story. Also the nature of authority is questioned in this story by revealing what people do during their acting in the role of authority.
I am almost finished, but I can tell you, this book is not for the feint of heart... The first chapter caught me so off guard, I couldn't stop reading it..
This novel is excellent, especially considering it's basically very long form fan fiction. Tyson did his homework when he researched the Cthulhu mythos for information on Alhazred, and then let his imagination run very very wild in the writing of this novel. The descriptions are amazing, and the dialogue is very well done. I expected a slow leadup to the story, but by the end of chapter one the main character is on his journey and as a reader you're on it with him.

One thing I noticed, and this may be good or bad depending on your preference, is that Part 1 has much more of a pulp fiction feel to it than Part 2. By this I mean it's much more of a plot driven story where it's clear Tyson knew where the story was going. Part 2 is more character driven and situational, and in that sense it's more literary, but doesn't have the pace of Part 1. The plot twist at the end is very well done, though I won't spoil it.

I enjoyed every second of this story. 5 tentacles.
