Alex goes back as an adult, but she now bears scars from an accident. She has become a reclusive wolf researcher. She hears rumors about a black wolf that some people blame for cattle killing and the death of a young girl. However, she also hears proof that not a wolf but a man caused the girl's death; so, she wants to help the wolf being hunted. Then she wakes up to find a naked man in her bed...who could it be, hmmm?
Read as Kieran and Alexandra come to face their fears: Alex about her "ugliness", and Kieran about the "beast" within. Both help each other to see more clearly. But what can they do about the new murders that point to Kieran as murderer? Is Kieran the murdering beast? read and find out!
This was one of my favorite so far of Susan Krinard's books. Loved that man! Gotta love the man on the jacket though...mmm..mm!

Alexandra Warrington, first went to Minnesota as a child, where she struck a friendship with shadow, a young black wolf, during the summer holidays. 17 years later, she returns to Minnesota, as a wolf researcher. There she saves a black wolf, not knowing that he is the same wolf that she met many years ago, when her life was carefree. The next morning, she wakes up and the wolf has disappeared but finds a handsome stranger lying next to her in bed. Alexandra slowly realises that the stranger called Kieran Holt is the one and same black wolf called shadow. For Kieran Holt is no human, he is a werewolf, a shape shifter. Kieran has amnesia and cannot remember his past. Alexandra vows to help Kieran unravel the mystery that is his past. With murders occuring at places where Kieran has been to, Alexandra must help him to find his memory and to clear his name.
This is a fast paced story, which will keep you turning the pages, especailly the chase scene across Minnesota up into the Canadian provinces. Alexandra is not a typical beauty but Kieran sees through her physical scars and helps her to overcome her mental scars. Alexandra fights with all her might from falling in love with Kieran but succumbs after she overcomes her fears. The evil charachter of Joseph Arnoux is a true villain and you'll be jumping up and down rooting for Alexandra and Kieran to beat him. Plus we get to meet again the gorgeous Luke Gévaudan from Prince of Wolves. This is a great read and highly recommended for all paranormal romance readers.
Lealing
Very enjoyable shapeshifter story, even poignant. Nicely plotted, with no obvious devices. Everything--from the dialogue to the actions and thoughts-- seemed to flow naturally from the characters. Even the villain's character was believable, and even somewhat sympathetic. Well done!

It's a hefty story, not like the more silly shapeshifter books I have read. It feels more angsty, situated in human drama, including loneliness, prejudice, fear, ignorance, greed, ambition, guilt, etc.

But even so, the story did not get bogged down in drama-- there was plenty of ACTION to keep the pages turning. And it started off with a bang, right from the prologue.

I felt drawn towards both the werewolf Kieran (Shadow) and his childhood friend and adult love interest, Alexandra. Their internal battles felt authentic, but not too melodramatic. They each had reasons to dwell on their issues, but neither wasted time in so much rumination that it distracted from the action (as occurs in too many romances). For Alex, it was overcoming her sense of low self-worth due to her father's and fiance's cruel abandonment, partly due to her facial scarring. For Shadow, it was overcoming his dreadful imprisonment, where he was taught to see himself as a monster, and his loss of memory.

It was lovely to see the childhood bond between wolf pup and human girl develop into a deep and lasting bond.

Shadow (Kiernan) was one sexy hunk, both inside and out. Very likable, and so was Alex. I wanted to see them both, but especially Shadow, get a HEA.

Secondary characters were well-drawn, too, especially The Ojibwe wolf clan, including the farseeing medicine women, Julie and her Grandmother.

I liked this story better than the prequel, Prince of Wolves. A tighter story line, nicely paced, and about 100 pages shorter, I think. Luke, the hero from Prince of Wolves, plays a fairly solid role in this book, but his mate, Joelle (Joey) is only a reference. We do find out they have two boys.

I disagree with some reviewers There is no strict need to read book 1 first.
One of the better books in this series.
I like this book because the plot takes so many twists and turns before the end. I could not put it down----always some new surprising element. One of Krinard's best werewolf romances.
I found story to be very interesting as it takes you from the main characters adolescents, and they reunite as adults.
Susan Krinard is a great writer of historic supernatural romance. Her books all start out slowly with lots of detail. Sometimes they seem to lag a bit, but 1/2 - 2/3 of the way into the book, she really kicks them into high gear. There are two books to this Val Cache series, but I am reading her other books as well and am enjoying them too.
